Spiced Orange Date Squares

A twist on the classic date square, this treat is perfect for the holidays and is super quick and easy to make.

Date Layer

  • 3/4 cups water
  • 2 cups pitted dates
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup orange juice

Oat Layer

  • 1 1/3 cup oat flour
  • 1 cup large flake rolled oats
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp nutmeg
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tsp orange zest
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a small sauce pan, heat the dates, water, and vanilla over medium/high heat. Cook until the dates mostly break down, about 5 minutes. Take the pan off the heat and stir in the orange juice.
  3. Pour the date mixture into a food processor or blender and blend until smooth. Set aside.
  4. Add all of the rest of the ingredients into a large bowl and stir to combine. Stir until all of the maple syrup combines evenly and the mixture is moist throughout.
  5. Lightly grease an 8×8 baking dish with coconut oil. Take half of the oat mixture and press it into the bottom of the pan, forming an even layer.
  6. Add the date mixture and spread evenly onto the base layer.
  7. Add the rest of the oat crumble on top and distribute evenly.
  8. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes. Cool before cutting and serving.
